The ActOnMagic Family – Building the startup teams

The ActOnMagic Family #10 / 101

My journey with ActOnMagic began with an amazing group of individuals who quickly became more than just colleagues—they became family. My first teammate, Ashish, joined us from Citrix. Madhu, our second teammate, was an intern from Amrita Engineering College, Bangalore. The third member of our team, Maheedhar, was inspired by my previous venture, GoGuroo, and joined from my own college. In Tamil, we fondly refer to our team as “தானா சேர்ந்த கூட்டம் (Thana Serntha Kootam),” meaning “Self-Created Team.”

We had a wonderful tradition of sharing a single parcel meal during lunch, joking that if we ever needed a second parcel, it meant we were growing bigger! Post-lunch, we bonded over the “Silicon Valley” web series, laughing together and learning as a team. These moments truly made us feel like a family.

My life partner supported us immensely, and our kids, aged 8 and 5, grew alongside us. Every day, after they returned from school and completed their homework, we’d all head to a nearby bakery at 4 PM for tea and biscuits. Our little bike races in the breeze brought so much joy and laughter.

Our team saw a minor setback when a new recruit left after his first paycheck without informing us. This experience led us to build our initial team through known friends, where interviews happened over lunch, and decisions were made by the end of the meal. Attitude was always our key criterion!

Why am I sharing this story with you today? Because TEAM is everything. In startups, we often pivot and pursue new ideas, but it’s the team that brings these ideas to life.

Let’s cherish and celebrate our teams!

Did you have lunch today?!
