Rudrakshas

Rudrakshas: God Siva’s Happy Tears

Rudrakshas are known as God Siva’s happy tears, born from the pure love and devotion of his followers. In Tamil, devotees are lovingly referred to as Adiyargal, and God Siva himself is called Adiyaarku Adiyar—the servant to the servant.

A Transformational Period

The pandemic, though a challenging time for many, was a deeply transformational period for me. It was during this time that I began studying the teachings of Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami, my Gurudeva, informally through his Master Course. Each lesson resonated with me profoundly, as if it was awakening a part of me that had been dormant. I often found myself asking, “MaGa, what were you doing all these days? How did you not come across these teachings before?”

For more than three months, my daily routine became intense and disciplined. I would wake up at 3 a.m., perform arati, practice Reiki, Sudarshan Kriya, and meditate. The entire world was locked down, and I chose to lock myself in devotion to Siva, dedicating every moment to deepening my spiritual practice.

The Beginning of My Rudraksha Journey

It was during this sacred period that I wore a Rudraksha for the first time. Curious about its benefits, I began researching the significance of different mukhis (faces) and their effects. My exploration was so detailed that it could have been a research paper!

Eventually, I acquired an Eka Mukhi Rudraksha. Wearing it deepened my practices significantly, leading to a remarkable transformation in my life. One such transformation was the disappearance of a birthmark or misalignment that I had lamented since childhood.

Who Can Wear Rudrakshas?

Rudrakshas, especially the 5-mukhi variety, are suitable for everyone, including women during their retreat period. Various customs exist across different sampradayas (traditions), so it’s best to follow your family or guru’s guidance.

The Eka Mukhi Rudraksha, however, is typically reserved for those who have renounced worldly life and embarked on the path of sannyasa. Traditionally, it is bestowed by a guru after clearing all karmas and as a final step in spiritual practice. Yet, the curious seeker in me decided to explore this powerful Rudraksha.

Though there is a belief that wearing an Eka Mukhi leads to renouncing family life within 12 years, I take precautions. For instance, I remove it before sleeping or entering the washroom.

Guidelines for Wearing Rudrakshas

  1. It’s strongly recommended to follow a vegetarian lifestyle when wearing Rudrakshas.
  2. Rudrakshas act as a protective shield, maintaining body vibrations and fostering calmness.
  3. They purify the environment, ensuring safety and positivity when visiting new places.

The Sacred Rudraksha Forest

Our Kauai Hindu Monastery in Kauai, USA, is home to the only Rudraksha forest in the United States. Experiencing this sacred space is unparalleled. Hugging the trees, witnessing the Rudraksha fruits, and observing their transformation into beads for spiritual practice is awe-inspiring. It’s a journey that connects you directly with Siva’s divine energy.

Closing Thoughts

For me, Rudrakshas are more than just beads; they are a spiritual armor, a reminder to stay calm, composed, and connected to Siva. They enhance my practice and serve as a bridge between my inner and outer worlds.

Let me know—what Mukhi are you wearing?

Takeaways:

  1. Spiritual Tools Have Power: Rudrakshas, when worn with respect and discipline, serve as powerful tools to enhance spiritual practices and maintain positive energy.
  2. Customs and Guidance Matter: Following traditions and guidance from a guru or family ensures the proper use of spiritual objects like Rudrakshas.
